Joe Sober, P.E. Regional Manager

NORMAN, OK, – KSA’s Aviation Services Group is proud to announce the promotion of Joe Sober, P.E., to Regional Manager. Joe was hired by KSA in November 2016 to establish KSA’s local Oklahoma office and build upon KSA’s growing aviation engineering and planning practice. Joe has spent his entire career as a consulting engineer in Oklahoma and will continue to be an ambassador for aviation and an active member of the Oklahoma aviation community.


Joint Forces Headquarters at Camp Beauregard, Pineville, LA
After hurricanes devastated the Louisiana coastline in 2005, the Louisiana National Guard saw fit to establish a headquarters building inland. The headquarters at Camp Beauregard maintains trained and equipped forces as reserve components of the Army and the Air Force and performs missions as directed by state and federal authorities. The $ 32.9M, 73,660 SF facility consists of a headquarters building, a Joint Operations Center (JOC) emergency vehicle storage building and an entry guardhouse.

San Angelo Regional Airport Terminal Building Renovation, San Angelo, TX
KSA was tasked with preparing plans and specifications to design a $6.2M-remodel of the terminal building, which includes an upgrade to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) area and creating efficient movement to and from the parking lot and terminal facilities.

The Imperial Connector Trail, Sugar Land, Texas
In alignment with their parks, recreation, and open space master plan, the City of Sugar Land hired KSA to design a hike and bike trail that would tie-in to a network of routes for pedestrians and bicyclists to utilize for exercise, recreation, and mobility. The city’s hike and bike trail master plan focused on linking portions of the city together as well as connecting neighborhoods to parks, schools, libraries, shopping, and other areas of interest.


Lake Tyler Whitehouse Dam Improvements, Tyler, Texas
After over 65 years of use, the Whitehouse Dam had become porous and structurally unsound. The Dam Safety Unit of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) recommended a detailed study followed by corrective action after a recent inspection cycle. When KSA was asked to mitigate the porosity of the dam, the goal was to do that with as little impact to the surrounding area as possible. To accomplish this task, we employed a variety of traditional and innovative solutions.


Rockdale Police New Building, Rockdale, TX
The project will include the new construction of an approximate 10,000 square foot new police station in the L-shaped parcel next to the Magic Wand Car Wash bound by US 79 to the north, San Gabriel St. to the east, E. Milam St. to the south, and Green St. to the west. The proposed construction within the 2.15 acre lot will consist of a building with driveways, a public parking lot, and a secure parking lot. This site was selected after the extensive evaluation of 15 potential sites within Rockdale, TX.

On Thursday, September 14, 2017, KSA held its second annual project management training summit at KSA’s headquarters in Longview, TX. Unlike last year’s focus on the Project Management Professional certification process, this year’s summit dealt with client relations and customer service. Attendees of the summit were given tools to heighten their ability to recognize and adapt to varying personalities, listen for understanding, and communicate more effectively.


City of Longview Sewer Line Repair, Longview, TX
During a significant rainfall event, the existing 30-inch sewer line interceptor that runs along Eastman Lake Creek became displaced, separating three joints, allowing water from the creek to enter the line. Large amounts of water infiltrated the line, quickly overcoming the I-20 Lift Station at the south end of the interceptor. City crews temporarily repaired the separated line to continue service, but KSA was asked to develop a permanent repair plan.


City of Tyler Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge Dewatering Facility, Tyler, TX
Efficiency experts with the City of Tyler conducted an investigation to explore ways the city could make various improvements. After carefully analyzing the city’s wastewater treatment methods, the efficiency experts discovered an area where they could save capital funds in the long term: more efficient sludge disposal.

When McKinney National Airport experienced a major growth spurt, KSA’s services were enlisted for a massive $47M runway replacement project. In order to extend the runway to the required length, FM 546 had to be rerouted to clear the path. This piece of the project was a small, but essential, slice of a much bigger pie.


On June 23, KSA’s own C. Daniel “Danny” Hays, P.E. was appointed to the Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals for the City of Lufkin. The board meets as needed to hear the appeals of decisions made by the building official, and to discuss other matters related to the implementation of building codes. At the request of the city engineer, Danny completed an application to join the board. His application was reviewed by city staff, then recommended to the city council for appointment.


KSA is pleased to welcome Chad Pennel, P.E. to our Aviation Services group. Working from our McKinney, Texas office, Chad will serve as a Regional Manager and Senior Project Manager. Chad’s interest in engineering spurred from a natural proclivity for math and science. Early in his career, Chad took a job working in the field at various airports, providing inspection and materials testing for aviation projects. He’s been working for airports for the last 19 years.


KSA is pleased to welcome Dan Tompkins, P.E. to our Aviation Services group. Dan will serve as a Regional Manager and Senior Project Manager working from our Sugar Land, Texas office. Dan attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in civil engineering and is a registered engineer in Florida and Texas.


For the fifth consecutive year, KSA was ranked among Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top Design Firms in Texas and Louisiana. ENR Texas & Louisiana is a regional subset of ENR Magazine. Out of 107 firms located in Texas and Louisiana, KSA was ranked 56th based on annual revenue. ENR is a weekly publication geared to the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.


Chris Basham is—for lack of a better term—a big deal. He joins KSA as Director of Federal Services, a newly developed service group. After graduating as valedictorian of his high school class, Chris was offered several scholarships; one by the Air Force ROTC. After securing a slot as an Air Force pilot, Chris was presented with another life-altering opportunity he couldn’t refuse. The Air Force had launched a new member retention program that sought to improve the quality of life of its members by refining the spaces where they lived, worked, and played.


KSA was named one of the 2017 Best Companies to Work for in Texas, an honor the firm has received for four consecutive years. The awards program was created in 2006 and is a collaborative initiative between Texas Monthly, the Texas Association of Business (TAB), the Texas Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and Best Companies Group.


KSA is the 2017 recipient of the Corporate Cup of Excellence, an award distributed by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE). This honor was awarded today, in Long Beach, CA, during the AAAE annual conference.

Bob joins KSA’s Municipal Services group as a Regional Manager. Leading our Austin office, Bob is a seasoned civil engineer with nearly 20 years of experience designing water and wastewater treatment systems for municipalities. Bob is passionate about client satisfaction. Over the course of his career, Bob has mastered the art of quickly recognizing the priorities of his clients in order to tailor his actions to satisfy their needs. “Sometimes, this requires creativity. Sometimes this requires good, old fashioned hard work.

When the school opened in 2012, the Leadership Prep School (LPS) leased space from a local church so they could offer classes as quickly as possible. Each year, enrollment increased significantly. Due to their steady growth, LPS engaged KSA to design a new building that would more adequately accommodate the school’s growing population of eager minds. The existing leased space will be used for kindergarten through fourth grade students, while the new facility—which is located just south of the current facility—will house middle and high school students.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services are the unsung heroes of the design world. Hidden behind ceilings, walls and stalls, the underrated nature of MEP services is usually noticed only when there’s a problem. We carefully design our MEP systems to work optimally and integrate seamlessly into existing designs.

KSA 2017 Shareholders

KSA’s annual shareholder meeting was held in January 2017. Among the many positive and exciting items discussed, four new professionals were added to the company’s prestigious group of shareholders: Hunter Hilburn, CEcD, EDFP, Michael Mallonee, Travis Pierce, P.E., and Vivek Khanna, Ph.D, P.E.


At this year’s annual shareholder meeting, Molly Waller, Manager of Planning and Business Development for KSA’s Aviation Services group, was elected to the Board of Directors. Molly joins previous and current members Tracy Hicks, P.E., Mike Burns, P.E., Craig Phipps, P.E., Lanny Buck, P.E., John Ringler, P.E. and President Mitch Fortner, P.E.
